Charles W Morgan
Published in Paperback by Mystic Seaport Museum Pubns (June, 1973)
Average review score:

The Life of a Whaler
"The Charles W. Morgan" is the revealing story of the whaler by the same name which is now the showpiece of the Mystic Seaport Museum. The ship, Charles W. Morgan, was a 19th century whaler which was unique, primarily, because it is the only survivor of its genre and era. As a typical whaler of its era, the story of the Charles W. Morgan gives the reader an insight into the whaling industry as well as a glimpse into life aboard a whaler.

Author John Leavitt begins the book with an description of the construction of the ship at New Bedford, Massachusetts. He then describes the nautical equipment on the Morgan as well as the equipment's employment on the its voyages. The usage of the equipment to sail the ship, capture the whales, the processing of the whales and the storage of the whale materials is described in interesting detail.

Leavitt continues his narrative with highlights from the voyages of the Morgan. He relates the economics of the whaling industry as well the routine of the sailors who manned her. The interesting characters who served aboard her add a human interest dimension to this book. The and the life of the occasional captain's wife who accompanied her husband on voyages is a surprising element of life aboard the Morgan. I found it interesting that the Morgan avoided the Civil War by being at sea for most of its duration.

The end of the American whaling industry and, with it, the commercial career of the Morgan are well described in this book. When the Morgan appeared to be condemned to follow the route of all other whalers which had outlived their usefulness, a group of preservationists came forward to preserve this unique representative of such a major portion of America's Maritime Heritage. The steps which led to the saving of the Morgan and its transformation into the most prominent exhibit at Mystic are reported in the book's final chapter.

The appendices provide lists of the voyages of the Morgan and the rosters of the crews which served her.

For this fan of Mystic Seaport, this short book provides an interesting and educational view into the world of whaling in general and the Morgan in particular. For anyone with an interest in this aspect of American history, "The Charles W. Morgan" is an interesting and worthwhile read.

Synopsis
The Nasser D. Khalili Collection contains some 2000 items of pottery, representing a millenium of ceramic production across the Islamic world. The catalogue of these holdings is to be published in two volumes. The first concentrates on the beauty of the work of the early Muslim potters, of which the Collection holds many attractive examples. The Collection is particularly rich in Saljuq lustrewares of the 12th and 13th centuries AD, and in the pottery of the Timurid period. Illustrations of all major types of early Islamic pottery are presented with brief introductory essays on each category, detailed discussions of individual objects, and a scholarly apparatus providing references to comparative pieces and to further reading.

Color Decoration & Illumination in Calligraphy: Techniques and Projects
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1997)
Author: Margaret Morgan
Average review score:

Lovely how-to on adding illumination to calligraphy

In the under $15 range of books regarding the methods of illumination, this little book can't be beat--and it is better then a number of how-to's priced over $15. The book offers a historical survey of illumination, an introduction to materials, 5 projects small enough to be non-intimidating to beginners (without being too simple for those with experience), and a gallery of modern calligraphy.

The book is lavishly illustrated with color photos, and is written in a friendly manner--no difficult jargon here. There is a small glossary for those bits of calligraphy terminology that can't be avoided.

The emphasis of the book is on modern usage; if you are looking for a book regarding historical method, you may be a bit disappointed. The "hisorical" calligraphic hands are all modern adaptations, as are the techniques and projects. On the other hand, if you want a lovely book to assist you in branching into illumination, this is for you.

I do think that the technique section is missing some worthy tips. Too, this book is written for those who dwell in England. This makes the suppliers list pretty useless for anyone not in the British Isles, and makes those who still use English Measurement run for their Metric Convesion Tables.

Fascinating use of materials
I don't normally buy "art" books - but when an artist friend of mine showed me her copy, I couldn't put it down...and I knew I had to get my own copy to share with my friends. The artist creates art in a fascinating way. I found her sculptures to be both amusing and mesmerizing.

Great Laugh with a Powerful Message
The book starts a little slow and it took a few chapters for me to really get into it. But once I did it was hard to put down. I was totally surprised with the ending. It really made me stop and think about my own life. A wonderful story. You will fall in love with Sam. You will reevaluate your own life. Not bad for your $.

Daddies
Very sweet, simple book about what Daddies do with their children. My 1 year old can relate to all the activities and vocabulary. She loves reading about someone she loves. There seem to be so many more books about Mommies, so I was glad to come accross this one in our library.
